Pahalgam to Amarnath Road Map

Pahalgam to Amarnath Cave: The distance from Pahalgam to Jammu is 315km and Pahalgam to Srinagar is 96 km. From Pahalgam to Amarnath Cave, the distance is 50km. The pilgrims can visit to Jammu and Kashmir reception center, Raghunath Bazaar by morning. By reaching the reception center by early morning will help the pilgrims to make an advance booking of the seats in luxury or semi luxury buses. But one can also move to Pahalgam by air and the remaining  distance can be covered by road. This route is also known as the traditional route by which the devotees usually travel.

The taxi owners will charge Rs 4000 to 6000 if the pilgrims are taking route from Jammu-NH1A highway. More than six hours of journey by taxi or bus traverses through many blockades and milestones. This generally includes driving path which goes from Jammu to Udhampur, Udhampur to Dhava, Dhava to Patnitop, Patnitop to Zwahar tunnel, Zwahar tunnel to Quazigund, Qauzigund to Anantnag, Anantnag to Banihal(longest tunnel), and finally, the halt point from Banihal to Pahalhgam leads to the pilgrimage camp.

After reaching the pilgrimage camp the visitors are advised to hire tent house. After taking rest for the whole day, the pilgrims must reach at Pahalgam bus stand early in the morning to board cab or taxi. The army personnel’s open the exit gate of the camps by 7:00 Am. But on repeated requests if the pilgrims are fortunate they can get the exit gates opened by early morning. As the word of caution it is suggested to book the taxis from Pahalgam stand on the very first day when pilgrims will reach at Pahalgam. Those people who are planning to board taxis by next morning would remain at great loss because hotels in Jammu, and near by to shrine get all the cabs booked for the package tour pilgrims or visitors going by helicopter or coming by advance booking sources. In fact, the pilgrims coming without any advance vehicle booking have to wait for many hours for the cabs or taxi at Pahalgam bus stand, in order to further carry out the yatra to Chandanwari. The route is as follow:

Pahalgam - Chandanwari(16km) - Pissu Top(3.0km) - Sheshnag(11.0km) - Mahagunas(4.6km) - Panchtarni(9.4km) - Sangam(3.0km) - Amarnath Cave(3.0km).

There are good numbers of langar camps (free meal camps) on the way where the pilgrims can satiate their gastronomical desires before the reaching the culmination point(Gufa ki Nadi 1.5 km from cave—pilgrimage camps).

After reaching the final halt point that is Gufa ki Nadi, the pilgrims can purchase ‘prasadam’. From this halt point, the Amarnath Cave is just 1.5 km. Here the pilgrims have to climb stairs and remain in que for  long hours to do the darshan of 14 feet high ice lingam. The que can be long and it may take 4-5 hours to reach the final destination; Swayambhu ice structure of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha.
