Baltal to Amarnath Cave: The distance from Jammu to Baltal is 414 km which can be covered by hiring taxi or bus. But if the pilgrims are going from Pahalgaon taxi/bus stand to Srinagar, then have to cover the distance of 100 km. It takes 2 to 3 hours to reach Srinagar by bus or taxi. On the way the travelers can fill their empty stomach with relishing meals provided by Nathu restaurant. The taxi from Pahalgam to Srinagar charges Rs 360 to Rs Rs 800 which can`t be quoted as the standard rates The standard rates by the tour operators may be quoted differently by many tour operators. The bus from Pahalgam to Srinagar charges Rs 120 to Rs 500 per person. It also depends upon the type of bus service, the pilgrims who are choosing. Depending on the budget, the pilgrims can choose to travel from standard coach, semi deluxe coach and deluxe coach. The mini coach also povide there regular services on Srinagar/Sonmarg route. The taxi and bus fares may vary. There are some tour operators who may charge Rs 2000 to Rs 2500 from Jammu to Pahalgam. It compleletly depends on the type of vehicle the people are hiring. If you are hiring air conditioned travera or innova then the fares may be quoted high by the tour operators and these prices can also be bargained. The prepaid taxis cna also be hired from local taxi stand. The pre-paid taxis have their fixed prices and in case if the pilgrims are more doubtful about the rates, the pre-paid taxis can be the best option.
The pilgrims if choosing the starting from from Jammu can follow the below given route:
JAMMU – Udhampur – Kud - Patnitop – Ramban – Banihal – KaziGund – Anantnag – Srinagar - Sonamarg --Zojila pass– Baltal.
After reaching Srinagar, the devotees can hire taxi which charges Rs 2000 and it takes 2-3 hours to hop till Baltal. The distance from Srinagar via Sonmarg to Baltal has the shortest route of 40 km which can be covered with in an hour or more depending on the traffic situation. After reaching Baltal, the pilgrims can take rest at the camp which charges Rs 400 to 600 per night. The tent houses at Baltal are more spacious and provide all the necessary facilities required during the stay.
At Baltal, the mobile phones don’t receive any signals. But there are telephone booths at Baltal pilgrimage camp where the pilgrims can talk to their near and dear once through satellite phones provided by Jammu and Kashmir government information center camp. The pilgrims with BSNL connection can easily connect to any state in India. It is advised to all pilgrims that they should get BSNL’s post paid connection if planning to climb the uphill distance of 4000ft to 11,000 ft, at Baltal or Pahalgam.
From Baltal the distance to Amarnath shrine is just 14 km which can be covered by foot. The pilgrims who have advance booking for the helicopters at Baltal can reach the shrine with in 10 minutes. The 14 km route map from Baltal is as follows:
Baltal(2km)— Domail(5km)—Barari Marg(4km)--Sangam Top(3km)(Confluence of Baltal and Pahalgam, langar free meals)—Narrow Pagdandi(Shop and stalls)—Gufa ki Nadi(1.5km from Shrine, camps available)—Amarnath Shrine
The Balatal Route leads to Sangam top which is also the confluence point of Balatal and Pahalgam. Here the pilgrims can also get free meals or langar which are assured to fill the vacant stomachs. From Sangam top the pilgrims will reach the culmination point that is Gufa ki Nadi. The trek from Gufa ki Nadi to Amarnath Shrine is 1.5 km. The devotees here can rest in the camps and head to the main shrine which can be covered in half hour or two. The prasadam camps of Amarnath Shrine board have come up at different points and a few meters ahead from Gufa ki Nadi. Here the pilgrims can buy prasadam and move to the main cave.
