Located at the height of 14,000ft, Amarnath Yatra in Kashmir, North India traverses through the enchanting routes which wend off to offer the views bandied by mesmerizing vistas. The total distance from Jammu to Pahalgam is 315 km. The uphill trek(chadayee)Phalgam to the cave is of 50km which can also be covered by foot or on pony or by horse ride. The trail to Shiva’s Shrine is quiet tiring and it takes more than a day to reach up to the apex point. The other trek goes from Srinagar via Sonmarg to Baltal(414km) which can easily be approached by boarding taxi or bus.
According to mythological books, legend has that the ice lingam at Amarnath Cave grows bigger and gets into the natural shape during a full moon day. The ice lingam waxes and wanes off with the different phases of moon. The Lingam is like other stalagmite ice formations which keep on increasing in upward direction. This is the sight when perceived through the mind’s eye, moots the astral image of Lord Shiva in its full splendor. The perfectly shaped swayambhu linga never fails to impress, convince and enthrall the pilgrims. The divinity of Lord Shiva is unquestionable. More than a million visitors visit this shrine during the month of August. The month of August is reckoned as the holy period of first full moon night during which Lord Shiva manifested himself. The pilgrimage to Amarnath if visited in the month of August (Shravan) could lend fruitful results to the wishful.
The opening timing for Amarnath Cave is 7:00 AM and the closing timings is 5:00 PM. The timings at Amarnath Cave may vary depending on the climatic conditions. The pilgrims are advised to carry woolens, blankets and an umbrella.
